Cloud Distillery Macedon Ranges Pink Gin

Based in Woodend, the gateway to Victoria’s Macedon Ranges – a region renowned for its culinary prosperity – Cloud Distillery is a fledgeling family-owned distillery devoted to sourcing local ingredients and supporting small businesses within the community.
ABOUT THE DISTILLERY
Nestled amidst the splendour of the Macedon Ranges, Cloud Distillery is a shared vision of couple James and Jane Oldland. The Oldlands, joined by their three children, embraced the Macedon Ranges as their home over a decade ago, well before the ‘tree-change’ trend surged during COVID-19. Rounding out the team is Josie Fletcher, who made the leap from Manchester, England to Woodend; bringing extensive financial experience to Cloud Distillery from roles in wineries and distilleries across the UK.
The passion project was born in the Oldland’s barn during the lockdowns of 2020. Armed with a modest 5L copper still from a local Melbourne brewing store, they embarked on a quest to create a gin that embodied the spirit of their vibrant and close-knit community.
Early iterations of their house style yielded mixed results, to put it delicately. James and Jane now look back and laugh at Jane’s reaction to the initial batch, which she famously spat into the kitchen sink. Meanwhile, James’ stepmother, Melanie, tactfully sipped to avoid any offense. Undeterred, Jane and James persisted, honing their craft until Cloud Distillery’s signature gin met Jane’s exacting standards. Finally, they’d perfected the recipe for what is now celebrated as their Macedon Ranges Dry Gin – a classic London dry gin infused with a distinctive Macedon Ranges twist, making it an essential addition to any collection.
Nowadays, Josie handles finance and HR, while Jane, affectionately known as the ‘tasting queen,’ leads the marketing efforts. James claims the title of Head Distiller, meticulously crafting each batch while maintaining business relationships and recruitment. When they are not making gin or working in the office, Jane and James are often found on their way to one of their childrens’ many sporting endeavours somewhere in Victoria.
Inspired by the ethereal atmosphere of their Woodend home – often shrouded in mist and dubbed a ‘village amongst the clouds’ – Cloud Distillery bears a name that reflects both its geographical roots and lofty aspirations.
“The people in the Macedon Ranges are amazing. There are some amazing distilleries run by local families and the owners of the establishments are highly supportive of locally made products.”
By positioning community and local small businesses at the forefront of their ethos, James, Jane, and Josie have built close relationships within the area, establishing Cloud Distillery as the go-to supplier of gin and vodka for several local establishments. Most recently, they teamed up with Holgate Brewhouse, an innovative brewing, bottling, and canning facility in Woodend, to create an exciting lineup of ready-to-drink products, in addition to being their ‘house’ spirit at the venue.
“We consider our relationships with pubs and restaurants to be a key part of our strategy, offering a quality, local product in an economical and sustainable way.”
Housed in their converted barn and currently equipped with three large pot stills, Cloud Distillery dreams of scaling up to a 200-300L copper still to meet growing demand off the back of their success.
“We underestimated the success and fast growth of the business. We are hiring new sales representatives and constantly expanding our operations to ensure we can keep up with demand for our products. We still sometimes pinch ourselves to think that this is still a very young distillery.”
While there is not yet a dedicated tasting room to visit, their gins can be savoured at several local establishments in the Woodend area, with plans underway to open their own distillery door by 2025.
“Sustainability is important to us, and maintaining the beautiful region we live and work in is at the heart of our business.”
From the beginning, Cloud Distillery has provided Eco Tanks to the pubs and establishments stocking their gins and vodkas. These Eco Tanks, made of fully recyclable plastic, significantly reduce glass and plastic wastage. For customers, Cloud Distillery offers $5 off gin and vodka for every bottle returned, with several drop-off locations available on request. By sterilising and reusing bottles, they minimise waste and reduce their environmental impact. Additionally, all botanicals and fruits used in the gin distilling process are composted in their nearby gardens.
ABOUT THE GIN
Cloud Distillery’s Macedon Ranges Pink Gin was the distillery’s second creation, inspired by a desire to highlight the local produce of the Macedon Ranges, especially the luscious berries that thrive in the warmer months. James enquired at several nearby berry farms, searching for producers who shared their vision.
Crafting the perfect pink gin was no small feat. James meticulously adjusted the botanicals for each batch, a process that took about eight to nine months, until Jane and other tasters were completely satisfied.
Building on the juniper-forward profile of their signature Macedon Ranges Dry Gin, Cloud Distillery married vibrant local strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries to create a pink gin unlike any other on the market. A far cry from many of the sticky, heavily sweetened pink gins that typically mask much of a gin’s botanical profile, this is a dry gin delicately imbued with hints of fragrant rose petals and sun-ripened berries, perfect for a G&T or cocktail.
This dedication to quality, community and local sourcing was rewarded when their Macedon Ranges Pink Gin took home a Double Gold medal at this year’s San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Reflecting on this achievement, James described it as “surreal,” celebrating the recognition as a world-class distiller of gin just months after going to market. Fittingly, the Cloud Distillery team, along with their children, celebrated with a meal in Woodend.
So, as we all awaken from winter’s slumber, Cloud Distillery’s Pink Gin is our ideal companion to welcome in the warmer months. It pairs beautifully with Asian fusion food, fish, and salads. For a unique twist, savour it after a meal as an alternative to dessert – or with dessert! OTHER PRODUCTS IN THE RANGE
Cloud Distillery’s range also features Macedon Ranges Dry Gin, Citrus Gin, Cherry Gin – each also receiving recognition in San Francisco this year. If you missed out on this month’s optional add-in of the 375ml Cherry Gin, good news! We have a limited number of bottles available so you can shop the range.
A Classic Vodka and a Raspberry Vodka complete the lineup, for now. If you’re lucky, you can catch a limited release – recently this included the Macedon Ranges Lime Gin, Navy Strength Gin, and a Coffee Liqueur – each so popular that they sell out faster than production can keep pace.
With the upcoming release of their new RTD’s set for November/December 2024, we cannot wait to take these new creations on the go. And one day, visiting Jane, James, and Josie during a trip up to the colourful Macedon Ranges. Cheers!
